Acharnes

Acharnes is one of the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destinations located in the Athens province of Europe. Also known as Menidi, Acharnes has a total land area of 146.41 square kilometers with a total population of 75,341 inhabitants as of the 2001 census and a population density of 515 inhabitants per square kilometers. Much of the area to the north of Acharnes is forested with Parnitha ranges and the parkland.

Acharnes blends a prosperous past and a thriving present. In the discovered history of Acharnes, it can be affirmed that this area was first populated during the pre-historic era. In ancient times when it was the deme Acharnae, many of its residents were charcoal peddlers, a fact which is put to comic use by Aristophanes in his play. Today it is a working-class neighborhood.

Even though Acharnes meant the partial loss of its tourist profile due to urbanization, some features of its past times of splendor still remain. It also experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air and mountain views. Because of the high quality of life locally, the population is growing faster than is normal in Acharnes.

Like some of its sister cities and towns, Acharnes is blessed with beautiful surroundings and a unique natural setting. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of the mountains, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people all combine to make this region one of the most important touristic attractions in Europe.
