Amarynthos

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Amarynthos is a municipality in Euboea, Greece. Its population in 2001 was 7,356. Amarynthos came to the forntline of Greek public life in October 2006 when the mother of a schoolgirl of Bulgarian descent pressed charges against three high school boys, sons of a priest a policeman and a high school professor, for raping her daughter in the school's toilets while filming the crime. The controversy which ensued has proven a rather ugly face of the often idealised greek rural life. The controversy started when the schoolmaster expelled the allegedly raped girl along with the three boys. This legally unprecedented act was followed by a feminist protest March or 4th November 06 in the village which was met by hostile locals who verbally abused the women groups in a provocativelly sexist manner.

With no provocation the peaceful anti-racists and anti-sexists were met by a rain of stones. Many were savagely attacked with sticks and even pick axes and had to receive medical care. The villagers alleged that the protesters had soiled the honour of their village, but bystanders testify that the locals' behaviour was constistently abussive, sexist and racist, even supportive of the rape. It can be noted that the village had a strong right wing alliegence since the civil war.

There is even today a monument in the center of the village commemorating the brutal massacre of patriots by gangster Slavic-communists. This term was widely used by the racist opressive regimes that ruled Greece till the collapse of the Junta in 1974 and the foundation of democracy in the country. The monument was stencilled over by the protesters reading, to the brutal massacre of economic immigrants by petty burgeois Greeks. The comment refered to the mid 1990s when the elected mayor of the village had issued a decree for all economic immigrants from east Europe to desert the village within three days or face extermination. Amarynthos has an unusually large record of racist anti-immigration crimes of violence.

Amarynthos is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in Europe. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of Europe.
