Apollonia is an ancient town in Greek Macedonia along the Via Egnatia, about midway between Thessalonica and Amphipolis. The modern town and municipality Apollonia is part of the Thessaloniki Prefecture and had 4.137 inhabitants as of 2001. Thessaloniki is Greece's second-largest city and the capital of the Greek region of Macedonia. Thessaloniki is commonly called the symprotevousa of Greece due to both its long history and its strategic geographic and economic importance. More formally it is known as the Capital of Cultural Affairs.
 
The city was founded circa 315 BC, Before Christ by Cassander, the King of Macedon on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and twenty six other local villages. The city experiences a Mediterranean climate. Those north of Thessaloniki experience a continental climate, with cold winters. The city is a major railway hub for the Balkans, with direct connections to Sofia, Skopje, Belgrade, Moscow, Vienna, and Budapest, Istanbul as well as Athens and other major destinations in Greece. Air traffic of the city is served with International and Domestic flights.
 
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Apollonia is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
