Assen

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, which is to the west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean, including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Assen is a municipality and a city in the north eastern Netherlands, capital of the province of Drenthe. It has an area of 83.48 square kilometer with a population of 62,645. Assen received the city rights in 1809. Their main claim to fame was the motorcycle racing circuit where on last Saturday in June, the Dutch TT was run.

The history of the capital of Drenthe started in 1258, when they had to find a new location for the monastery Maria in Campis, which was originally built near Coevorden. It stood there in a poor peat area, which also happened to flood from time to time. A better and especially dryer spot for the Cistercienzer monastery was found in the form of Witten, on a place where at that time only few farms were localized. There were village communities like Deurze and Witten en Peelo around it. The last one has a history which goes back to the times from when Dolmens were built, but now it lays jammed in between two new districts of Assen.

Around 1900, Assen began to play a more prominent industrial role. It was originally a centre of civil servants, but the establishment of a slaughter house, dairy factory and iron foundry created more diverse expansion opportunities and encouraged growth. After World War II, Assen did not have more than 20,000 inhabitants. Assen is the fastest growing city in the northern part of the Netherlands, has ample employment opportunities, particularly in the service industry.

Assen is a beautiful place. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Europe, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die hard travelers the world over.
