Gortyna, Arcadia

Karytaina is a town located in the western part of the prefecture of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese. It is the seat of the municipality of Gortyna. Skorta was the Frankish domination name. The shortest length is about 200 ot 300 meters. It is located about just 1 kilo meters north-west from GR-76, 1 kilo meters north-west of the Karytaina  Stemnitsa Dimitsana road, 25 kilo meters south-west of Dimitsana, about 50 kilo meters west of Tripoli, 26 kilo meters north-west of Megalopoli, about 28 kilo meters from GR-7/E65, about 75 kilo meters north of Kalamata, about 70 kilo meters south-east of Krestena and about 72 to 75 kilo meters south-east of GR-9/E55 and 28 kilo meters east of Andritsaina. The location is on a triangular-trapezoidal rocky hill with bushes and some forests which include a fortress on the top.
 
The name of the municipality dates back to the ancient times as an ancient region. The ancient settlement of Gortys, modern Gortynos which Gortynia comes from is to the north. In the Medieval times, Karytaina used to be known as the Toledo of Greece. It is bordered with the prefecture of Ilia in the west along with its boundary over a steep cliff in the west where the highway passes.
 
Gortyna, Arcadia is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
