Goumenissa

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Goumenissa is a small traditional town, capital of Paionia Province of Kilkis Prefecture in Central Macedonia, Greece. The town sits on the southeastern part of the Paiko mountain range. It is located 69 kilometers northwest of Thessaloniki, 539 kilometers north of Athens and 20 kilometers north of the ancient capital of Macedonia , Pella. The population of the city was 6,819, the area is 200.33 square kilometers.

There are a lot of versions of the origin of the name Goumenissa. Most likely is that according to the local tradition, robbers hung the Abbot of the abbey, and the city's name, which means place of Abbot derived from this; later it became Goumenissa.

Goumenissa possesses a small part from the land of the Paionians the exact boundaries of which, like the early history of its inhabitants, are very obscure. According to the national legend, they were Teucrian colonists from Troy. Homer speaks of Paionians from the Axios fighting on the side of the Trojans, but the Iliad does not mention whether the Paionians were kin to the Trojans. Homer gives the Paionian leader as a certain Pyraechmes, but later on in the Iliad Homer mentions a second leader, named Asteropaeus, son of Pelagon.

Goumenissa is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
