Makrakomi




Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. Makrakomi is a municipality in the western part of the Fthiotis prefecture in Greece. It has a population of 7,173 in 2001. Makrakomi is linked with the GR-38 and serves roads to the northwestern part and to Spercheiada. Makrakomi is located east of Karpenisi, east-north-east of Agrinio, south of Karditsa, west of Lamia and the GR-1/E65 and the E75 as well as the GR-3 and west-north-west of Amfissa.
 
Built on the southern slopes of Western Othrys at an altitude of 280 m, it prevails from a transportation, administration and financial point of view and affords the visitor aesthetic pleasure as it overlooks the Spercheios and its valley. It is home to history and civilization, as well as, modern infrastructure and a picturesque atmosphere.
 
Makrakomi market town bears the name of the ancient Aenian town Makra Komi  whose ruins can be seen in Prophet Elias. Makra Komi is mentioned by the historian Livy in his description of the destruction of Sperchias by the Aetolians. The hillock of Prophet Elias, the little church of Agia Paraskevi, the Acropolis of Makrakomi  and the hillock of Lavanitsa are all worth visiting.
 
Makrakomi has two lyceums, a gymnasium, seven churches, a post office, many banks, a few squares, cafes and places to eat, hotels and rooms to let, a well-organised market, a river nearby, lots of green and a picturesque surrounding area. Makrakomi is an ideal place to walk, discover and enjoy a relaxed vacation break.
 
Culture and other events organized in commemoration of the Battle of Makrakomi, three-day Carnival festivities in Makrakomi. Music nights, dedicated events, exhibitions and theatricals are also put on in summer.

A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Makrakomi is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
