The total population is of 8,813 inhabitants with the density of 81 inhabitants per square kilometers. The municipality is composed of 15 parishes and is located in the district of Viana do Castelo. The present Mayor is Jose Manuel Vaz Carpinteira who was elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is on October 1.
