Abdera, Thrace




Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. Abdera is one of most popular attractions in Europe, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related notion. It is a town on the coast of Thrace, 17 kilometers to the East-North-East of the mouth of the Nestos, and almost opposite to Thasos. However, the site presently lies in the Xanthi territory of modern Greece. Also called as Avdira, the Abdera municipality has a population of 3,917 inhabitants as of 2001.
 
Abdera’s mythological foundation was accredited to Heracles, its historical one to a colony from Clazomenae in the 7th century BC. But its affluence dates from 544 BC, when the majority of the people of Teos voyaged to Abdera to escape the Persian repression. Abdera can also boast the presence of architectural treasures of great interest.
 
Abdera seems to have declined in significance after the middle of the 4th century BC. The ruins of the town may still be seen on Cape Balastra. These ruins cover seven small hills, and extend from an eastern to a western harbor. There are also the remnants of the medieval settlement of Polystylon on the southwestern hills. The city was a member of the Delian League. It was continually sacked, as a valuable prize by the Triballi in 376 BC, Lysimachos of Thrace' the Seleucids, the Ptolemies, and again to the Macedonians.
