Agiasos
Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. Europe is also admired for its natural beauty, marvelous surroundings and remarkable cities.
Agiasos is one such popular tourist attractions in Europe that is blessed with unique and marvelous surroundings. It is a town on the island of Lesbos, in Greece. Located at the slopes of mountain Olympos, at a height of 475 meters and 26 kilometers from Mytilene, Agiasos is admired for its special bright green landscape, its narrow cobbled streets lined by ranks of tiled-roof houses, the traditional architecture and its restless and religious inhabitants.
Agiasos is also an artistic and religious centre of the island and is a preserved settlement that has many to offer to visitors. A very famous cultural institution has been established in 1854 when the village was still under Turkish domination, the reading society of Anaptixi. Today it has a great library, a theatre hall and a folklore museum.
The tourist attractions in and around Agiasos include Chimaera, which are some eternal flames that may be seen issuing from the ground. The fuel source for the flames is natural gas, largely methane, seeping through cracks in the earth. There are also two fortresses built by Venetians, Genoese and Rhodians in the middle ages. Today the site attracts tourists, not only for the artifacts that can still be found, but also for its scenic landscapes supporting wild grapevines, flowering oleander, bay trees, figs and pines.
Agiasos boasts many traces of its colonial past and enjoys peaceful lifestyle sheltered from the accelerated pace of the large cities. The choice of leisure facilities available in Agiasos is much greater than in other town of similar size. This is true not only because of its above-average cultural range, its many high-class museums or the antiquities. Besides culture, Agiasos also offers many other possibilities for amusing oneself at sports, walking through the old town or a stroll to the shops in the inner city.
