Alveringem




Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Alveringem is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Alveringem proper, Beveren a/d Yzer, Gijverinkhove, Hoogstade, Izenberge, Leisele, Oeren, Sint-Rijkers and Stavele. On January 1, 2006 Alveringem had a total population of 4,887. The total area is 80.01 square kilometers which gives a population density of 61 inhabitants per square kilometers. The mayor of Alveringem is Marc Wackenier since 2000. Cyriel Verschaeve was as a priest attached to the parish of Alveringem and re-buried near Alveringem's church in 1973.
 
The municipality of Alveringem has a relatively low population density and the number of inhabitants has still decreased last decades. The extensive territory comprises nine rural towns or deelgemeentes. De is the largest town of Alveringem proper, the chief town, located in the northeast of the municipality. During the merger of municipalities in 1971, the villages Hoogstade, Oeren and Sint-Rijkers were added to Alveringem. In 1977, Leisele and Stavele, independent municipalities at the time, were added as well. As from 1971, Leisele also comprised the villages Gijverinkhove and Izenberge. Since 1977, the new extended municipality comprised the nine rural deelgemeentes.

Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. Alveringem enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
