Amorgos
Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.
Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Greek Cyclades island group. It is the closest island of the Cyclades to the neighboring Dodecanese. The area is 121 square kilometers and the population is about 1,800. Its population density is 15 per square kilometers. It covers an elevation of 320 meters above sea level.
Due to the position of Amorgos across from ancient beaches of Ionian towns, such as Militos, Alikarnasos and Efessos, it became one of the first places from which the Ionians passed through to the Cyclades Islands and onto mainland Greece. The existence of three independent cities with autonomous constitution and the same currency, which have been preserved to this day, the size and artistic works of the walls surrounding the city of Arkesini, the ancient towers to which skeletons were raised to this day all over the island, the ancient tombs, the stone tools, the inscriptions, the vases and other antiquities are all powerful proof of the size of the ancient civilisation of Amorgos.
Amorgos is also known as Yperia, Patagy, or Platagy, Pagali, Psichia, and Karkisia. Part of the island is named Aspis, where the ancient temple of the Goddess Aphrodite stood. From the name Minoa they suspect that from ancient times Amorgos had been colonised by the Cretans. Amorgos has a few schools, a lyceum, churches, a post office and squares. The spectacular monastery of Panagia, Chozoviotissa is situated on the cliff side to the northeast of Chora.
Amorgos is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in Europe. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of Europe.
