Doetinchem

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Doetinchem is a city and municipality in the east of the Netherlands. It stands on the Oude IJssel river in a part of the province of Gelderland called the Achterhoek. The municipality has 56,700 inhabitants and has an area of 79.66 square kilometers. This makes Doetinchem the largest town in the Achterhoek.

On 1 January 2005, a municipal reorganization merged the neighbouring municipality of Wehl into Doetinchem. It is known from archaeological finds of skulls, pottery shards, and flint arrowheads that the area was inhabited more than 11,000 years ago. These prehistoric hunters were followed by Celtic and Germanic tribes like the Franks and Saxons. Roman coins have been found and there is also archaeological evidence of the Normans having plundered the area.

Doetinchem is connected to the Dutch national highway system since November 1974, when the Zevenaar-Doetinchem section of Highway 15 was opened. This section was extended to Varsseveld in 1984.

Doetinchem is served by rail from Arnhem by the regional train Arnhem, Winterswijk with two stations, one in the city centre and Doetinchem De Huet lying to the west between the suburbs of De Huet and Dichteren. The rail company is Syntus, which also runs buses throughout the area.

Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. Doetinchem enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
