The population of Fatima was 10,302 in the year 2001 with an area of 71.29 square kilometers.
The name of the city formerly a small village comes from the Arabic Fatima and derives from a local Muslim princess named Fatima. At present, Fatima attracts hosts of believers from far and wide, particularly on the pilgrimage days and the shrine has been developed on a correspondingly large scale. The large torch light processions in the evening are particularly impressive.
