Kalamaria is one of the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destinations that is located in Europe. Kalamaria is an affluent, suburban city in the Thessaloniki Prefecture located about 5 kilometers southeast of downtown Thessaloniki. The municipal has a population of 87,312 as of 2001 and is the second-largest in Macedonia the ninth-largest in Greece. It has increased 8 percent since the 1991 census. It has an area of 6.40 square kilometers with density of 13,631 per square kilometers and population of 87,255.
 
The name Kalamaria was first used in 1083 to denote the area southeast of Thessaloniki, including but not limited to the area of the present-day municipality. During the Byzantine and the Ottoman periods, the area was mostly uninhabited. Kalamaria has seen substantial recent growth as part of a population shift from rural and urban areas to suburban areas.
 
Kalamaria can also be considered as the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destination that enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers to become one of the most visited places.
