Maia is both a parish and a city in the north of Oporto metropolitan area with a population of 9816, whereas the urban area of the city has a population of 38,858. The municipality has 17 parishes and 120,744 people. Another important village in Maia municipality is Aguas Santas with 25,249 people in conurbation with Oporto.
 
Maia municipality is as a highly developed municipality by European standards with the biggest industrial park in the Oporto metropolitan area and some of best quality of life in Portugal In the parish of Moreira in Pedras Rubras is located the Oporto international airport, Francisco Sa Carneiro.
