Marathon, Greece
Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Marathon is a town in Greece, the site of the battle of Marathon in 490 before christ, in which the Athenian army defeated the Persians. A legendary run of a messenger named Phidippides from Marathon to Athens, a distance of 26.2 miles or 42 kilometres, after the battle forms the basis for the modern-day marathon race. Marathon is the Greek word for fennel. It is believed that the town was originally named so because of an abundance of fennel plants in the area. It has the total population of 8,882. Its total area id of 97.06 square kilometers and population density is of 92 square kilometers. Marathon was the starting point for both men and women marathon races.
Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic is a country in south-eastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan peninsula. It is bordered by Bulgaria, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the north and by Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west.
