The region of Santarem has been inhabited since pre-historic times, first by the Lusitani people, and then by the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Portuguese Christians. Of the various legends related to the foundation of Santarem, the most famous tells of the Visigoth Saint Iria, who was supposedly martyred in Tomar and whose uncorrupted body reached Santarem.

The name of the town would be a miss pronunciation of Santa Iria. The city of Santarem stands on a plateau, on the right bank of the Tagus river, 65 kilometers northeast from Lisbon. Santarem is also said to be as the town of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and pursue enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace.
