Overkalix

Overkalix is a municipality in Norrbotten County, in northern Sweden. Its seat is in Overkalix, with close to 1,000 inhabitants. It has total area of 2,791 square kilometers with population is 3,933 and density is 1.4 per square kilometers. The town traces its history to a parish with this name that was formed in 1644. In 1921, the parish had 6,610 inhabitants and covered an area of 2,931 square kilometers, about the same size as today. The municipality was formed in 1971 with the municipal reform. The designed coat of arms was designed in 1944 and based on the arms of the parish.
