This municipality has a population of 131,690 inhabitants and a total area of 201.7 square kilometers. The density of the region is 653 inhabitants per square kilometers. The present mayor is Armindo Alves Costa who got elected by a coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic Social Center. The economy of the municipality is mainly based on textile and food industries.
