Andorra: The Pyrenean Country

Andorra is a small country located in the Pyrenees, between Spain and France. For a long time it was lonely and isolated, but it has reached great prosperity since World War II through tourism and its status as a tax heaven.

The official name of the country is the Principality of Andorra. Its official language is Catalan although other languages are spoken, including Spanish and French. Most of the population of Andorra are Catholics (99,1 percent), and there is a minority of Protestants as well as some Jews.

Mare de Deu de Meritxell is one of the most famous holidays in Andorra, and it is celebrated on September 8th. In January 17th, the San Antonio Abad is also celebrated.

Its capital is Andorra la Vella. It is the highest capital in Europe. Its main axis is Meritxell Avenue. In the outskirts of the city, you can make different journeys such as the Andorra la Vella – Les Escaldes route, including a climbing of the black peak of Urgell, which is 8861 feet high. Other important cities include Santa Coloma (where you can find the most popular church in the Principality, the Church of Santa Coloma), Les Escaldes, Sant Julià de Loira, Aixovall, Aubinya, Juberri, Encamp, and La Massana.
