Syracuse Archaeological Park in Sicily

If you travel to Italy and you love archaeology, you should visit the Syracuse Archaeological Park located in Sicily. There, you will surely find some of the most important attractions of the town. For example, on the Temenite Hill, you will have the opportunity to see one of the most important theaters of the classical period, the “Teatro Greco” (Greek Theater). With luck, you will be able to enjoy classical plays by Aeschylus, Euripedes and Sophocles presented by the Italian Institute of Ancient Drama. In the exterior of the Greek Theater, you will see the ancient quarries, “Latomia Del Paradiso”, one of the four excavations from which stones were hauled to build the huge monuments of Syracuse in its days of splendor.

Others attraction of the Archaeological Park are the Altar of Heron and the Roman Amphitheater. The first one was used by the Greeks for sacrifices relating hundreds of animals at once. The second one was created at the time of Augustus, and it is one of the five amphitheaters left by the Romans in Italy. In contrast with the peaceful Greek Theater, the Roman Amphitheater rather had to do with gladiators with daggers and tridents, slaves and beast all fighting against each other for their life in the arena.
