Affligem
Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Affligem is one such remarkable tourist city in Europe that is blessed with unique and marvelous surroundings. It is a municipality covering a total land area of 17.70 square kilometers with a total population of 11,956 inhabitants and population density of 676 inhabitants per square kilometer. It is located at about 20 kilometers to the west-north-west of Brussels in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant, not far from the town of Aalst and the important railway junction of Denderleeuw.
The municipality of Affligem encompasses the villages of Essene, Hekelgem and Teralfene. Historically, the village is best known for the Benedictine Affligem Abbey, founded in 1062. The discovered history of Affligem show that by 1574 the abbey of Affligem was already brewing its famous beer which is still produced today, under license from the monks of Affligem, by the Op-Ale brewery in the neighboring village of Opwijk. The brewery is now owned by Heineken Brewery, who markets it internationally.
