Eeklo

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Eeklo is an exclusive touristic city located in Europe. It is a Belgian municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality only comprises the city of Eeklo. The name Eeklo comes from the contraction of eke and lo, which are two old German words meaning oak and sparse woods. Eeklo stretches over a total land area of 30.05 square kilometers and has a total population of 19,535 inhabitants as of the 2006 census.

In its discovered history, during the second half of the 16th century, Eeklo was in the unfortunate position of being on the border between the Catholic South and the Protestant North. The 18th and 19th centuries were more favorable and the textile industry took off again. Most of the city’s schools and neo-gothic buildings date from that period. Presently, Eeklo is varying its vocation from an industrial city to one of services to the neighboring communities.

The places of interest in Eeklo include the Eeklo City Hall and Belfry. Both, the City Hall and Belfry have been designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a world heritage site in 1999. Eeklo also has interesting churches and chapels, such as the St Vincent Church and the chapel of the clinic of the Holy Heart. There is also a nearby provincial park called as Het Leen that includes an arboretum and museum.

Like some of its sister cities and towns, Eeklo is blessed with beautiful surroundings and a unique natural setting. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of the mountains, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people all combine to make this region one of the most important touristic attractions in Europe.
