Dendermonde

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Dendermonde, in French is known as Termonde. It is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the city of Dendermonde proper and the towns of Appels, Baasrode, Grembergen, Mespelare, Oudegem, Schoonaarde, and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde. As its name implies, Dendermonde is located at the mouth of the river Dender, where it flows into the Scheldt.

The 16th century saw a decline in Dendermonde’s fortunes. A decade later, the Spaniards built their own fortress between the Dender and the Scheldt. The second half of the 18th century was generally prosperous, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and a local cotton industry. After 1800, the port facilities were modernized and the first railways were laid down, allowing other industries oil, shoe, leather to move in. Today, the city is an administrative, commercial, educational, and medical centre for the surrounding region.

The city has some place of interest such as the beguinage, a collection of small buildings used by Beguines, is a UNESCO, United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization, World Heritage Site since 1998. The city hall and belfry have also been designated a World Heritage Site since 1999. The belfry houses a carillon and was formerly part of the Cloth Hall. Dendemonde has a Benedictine abbey right in the centre of town. Dendermonde likes to be known for its decennial procession, featuring the heroic horse, Ros Beiaard.
