Larissa

Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.

Larissa is the capital city of the Thessaly periphery of Greece, and capital of the Larissa Prefecture. It is a main agricultural centre and a transportation hub, linked by rail with the port of Volos and with Thessaloniki and Athens. It had a population of 124,376 inhabitants in 2001 living within an area of 122.6 square kilometers giving a population density of 1,828 inhabitants per square kilometer. Traces of Paleolithic human settlement have been recovered from the area, but it was peripheral to areas of advanced culture. The area around Larissa was extremely fruitful, it was agriculturally important and in antiquity was known for its horses. The city finally moved closer to the rest of Greece. The name Larissa, which pre-dates Indo-European languages, was common to many Pelasgian towns and comes from the Greek nymph Larissa. Larissa Prefecture was created in the 1880s after the war when Thessaly became a part of Greece. Thessaly is one of the 13 peripheries of Greece, and is further sub-divided into 4 prefectures.

Greece officially the Hellenic Republic is a country in south-eastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. Greece is a member of the European Union since 1981 and a member of the European Economic and Monetary Union since 2001. The shores of Greece's Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first advanced civilizations in Europe whose impact is inseparable from today's western institutions.
