Machico
Europe is one of the five inhabited traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the waterways adjoining the Mediterranean to and including the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. On the east, Europe is divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains and by the Caspian Sea. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent in terms of area and third-largest continent after Asia and Africa in population.
Machico is both a municipality and a municipal seat located in the northeastern part of the Madeira Islands. The town was founded in 1451. Machico is the easternmost municipality on the island and is the second most populous city after the capital Funchal. The population of the municipality was 21,747 in 2001. It is located 17 kilometers north-east of Funchal, north-west of the Savage Islands, 20 kilometers south-east of Santana and west-south-west of Porto Santo.
The main source of the economy is agriculture, tourism, and fishing while a small number of businesses are in the downtown area. The forests lie to the central and western parts while the grasslands covers the northeastern portion. The harbor has an excellent promenade with lights and offers a view of Machico, the mountain slopes and the road linking to Santana and the northern part of the island. A small harbor filled with yachts lies east of Machico.
Machico has several primary schools, lower secondary school, an upper secondary school, banks, a post office, a small port, beaches and squares or plazas. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Europe one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
