Sittard-Geleen is a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. It was formed in 2001 from the former municipalities Sittard, Geleen and Born. To the west, Sittard-Geleen borders on Belgium, while to the east, it borders on Germany. In 2005,it had a population of 97,007 inhabitants living within an area of 81.41 square kilometers giving as population density of 1,215 inhabitants per square kilometer.
 
Sittard is a city with 48,400 inhabitants. It is the home of the semi-professional football club Fortuna Sittard. The SABIC, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, European head offices, as well as the large DSM, Dutch State Mines, office and production facilities are based in Sittard. Sittard was granted city rights in 1243. In Geleen, a town of 33,960 inhabitants, the remains of the oldest prehistoric farms of the Netherlands were found here. The soccer club Fortuna was the former soccer club of Geleen. Also the Rock festival Pinkpop has its roots in Geleen. This festival was held on a horse race track.
