This Mediterranean country is located in southeastern Europe. Serbia (Kosovo) borders Albania in the northeast, Macedonia in the east, and Greece in the south. It is also bordered in the west by the Adriatic Sea and in the southwest by the Ionian Sea. The country is an emerging democracy, and its full name is Republic of Albania. Its official currency is the New Lek, which is divided into 100 qindarkas. There are coins of 5, 10, 20, and 50 qindarkas, and coins of 1 new lek. Bills are of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 lecke.

The official language of Albania is the Albanian, which is an Indo-European dialect from ancient Illiric. Until 1990, Albania was officially atheistic. However, this situation changed when Mother Theresa of Calcutta, an Albanese from Macedonia, obtained the Nobel Peace Prize. Today, religion in the country is 70% Muslim, 17% Orthodox, and 10% Catholic.

Among the most celebrated holidays in Albania, New Year, Easter Monday, and May 1st, are very popular. Other popular holidays include the Independence and Freedom Day on November 28th, and Christmas. Muslims celebrate their holidays in variable dates.
Tirana is the capital city of the country. Other major cities are Durres (Durazzo), Kruja, Lezha (Alessio), Shkodra (Scutari), Fier, Apolinia, Vlora, Saranda, Butrint, Gjirokastra, Berat, Elbasan, Pogradec, and Korça.
